Rebuttal Argument Assignment Sheet
For this assignment, write a rebuttal argument (which will mainly focus on refutation) that follows the guidelines below.
• Length: The final draft should be from 3-4 pages
• Number of Sources: 3
• Topic? You choose an article to rebut.
• Font: Times New Roman, 12, all lines double spaced, no name info anywhere in the essay, if it occurs, a minus 5 points. Title is on line 1. No extra line space after the title.

Introduction Section
In this section, do the following (you may have two to three paragraphs in this section depending on how much information you provide):
• Engage the reader concerning controversy surrounding the issue that both the article you are refuting and your own rebuttal will address. You may want to begin with a quote or shocking statistic from research.
• Transition to the role/contributions of the author/article you are going to rebut. Be sure to include the author’s name, the title of the article, the original place and date of publication (look on the internet)
• A short (and fair!) summary of the article you will be refuting (the summary will include the author’s main idea, and the key supporting points for the main idea)
• Your thesis should appear at the end of the introduction section.
Note about your thesis statement: Your thesis should focus on your objections to the essay and/or points of refutation.

Body Section
Write body paragraphs that support your points of refutation stated in the thesis.

Generally, when you construct a body paragraph, you begin with a topic sentence that states the main idea of the paragraph. From there, you move into including a piece of evidence – a quote or a paraphrase from a source– that illustrates the point, evidence or fallacy that you wish to refute. From there, discuss your opposition using the quote or the paraphrase you included, and you should consider adding counter-evidence from another source as necessary to support your refutation. Remember that your logos (logical appeal) should be strong here!

This will be the longest section of the essay. Consider at least one paragraph per point of refutation.

Conclusion Section
Conclude on a firm note by underscoring your objections. Also, you could consider ending with a counterargument or counterproposal.

Works Cited
Don’t forget that you must include a Works Cited page. Be sure that there is one entry for each source used in your rebuttal.
